Karen Hunter
Karen Hunter : Designer
Karen's handcrafted jewellery is very colourful and fun.
Karen graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1985. She has been designing and making jewellery since 1983. She works with Sterling Silver, semiprecious stones and Niobium, a very rare pure metal which is naturally hypoallergenic and when anodized produces a rainbow of colours. In 1990, Karen took a workshop working with Niobium and Titanium, where she found the metal for her! Between 1985-1990, she worked for Fairthorne Studios making brass hollowware and giftware. This is where her Silversmithing skills were refined. All of the jewellery is handmade by Karen at her home studio in Caledon East, Ontario. Each piece is hand cut and formed. After all the work is done to each piece of Niobium, it is anodized to create the colour, where she can use resists to create patterns. In 2016, Karen was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to make 6000 three dimensional tiny dragonflies. They were attached to a 1oz fine Silver collector coin. Karen has tried many different kinds of art. she is also a Quilter and Watercolour artist.
